A derby to remember: how our U16s clinched a thrilling 3-2 victory over local rivals

Derbies don’t follow form, and Saturday’s coastal derby followed the script to the letter. Saltmarsh U16s twice came from behind to beat Harbourside United 3-2 in front of the biggest academy crowd of the season — sealed by a stoppage-time winner that sent the east touchline into delirium.
First half: chasing the game
Harbourside struck first against the run of play, punishing a loose clearance on eighteen minutes. Saltmarsh responded the right way: patient build-up, full-backs overlapping, and an equaliser five minutes before the break when our skipper turned his marker and finished low across the keeper.
Second half: nerve and noise
The visitors retook the lead from a set piece just after the hour, and for ten minutes the derby looked gone. But this group has been studying pressure in the analysis room all season — and it showed. Two goals in the final quarter, the winner a sweeping team move finished at the far post, completed the comeback.
What we learned
- Shape holds under pressure. Even 2-1 down, the back four kept its distances — the winning goal started with our goalkeeper.
- Subs change games. Both second-half introductions were involved in goals within fifteen minutes.
- The crowd matters. Three hundred voices on a touchline lift teenage legs like nothing else. Thank you to everyone who came.
Next up: Eastmere Rovers away on Saturday. The coach leaves the Marsh Ground at 10:30 — all support welcome.
